Northumbria University and Ben Hoare Bell LLP team up to provide free legal advice to Newcastle residents

Ben Hoare Bell LLP, one of the largest legal aid firms in the North East has teamed up with Northumbria University School of Law on a new project that aims to improve access to legal advice for people living and working in the Newcastle area.

Legal Advice Byker

Legal Advice Byker will see Ben Hoare Bell LLP opening their office at Ouseburn Point, Shields Road, Byker between 5pm and 7pm on a Thursday evening for 10 weeks starting on 09 February 2012.

Students from Northumbria School of Law will be offering free one hour appointments to members of the public in a number of different areas of law under the supervision of solicitors working for the Law School and Ben Hoare Bell LLP.

The 10 week long project is being run as a pilot and it is hoped that the project will then be extended, running from October 2012 for the academic year and possibly beyond.

Jeff Dean, Managing Partner at Ben Hoare Bell LLP said: “Good initial advice is essential in any legal issue.  There are an increasing number of people who do not qualify for legal aid, who have a good case, but who are wary of seeking legal advice.  We believe this initiative will help to meet this very real need.”

Kevin Kerrigan, Dean of Northumbria Law School said: “The Law School has always been committed to working with the community and giving our students practical experience of what it means to be a lawyer.  We truly hope that this pilot will be successful and that the project will be extended from October 2012 for the benefit of the local community.”
