The Woon Foundation Scholarships were established by Wee Teng Woon, a former Northumbria School of Law student from Singapore.  Upon graduation, Woon went on to become a successful lawyer in Singapore where he is now retired. The annual scholarships are in memory of Woon’s family members, who were a great support to him throughout his studies and who made a huge sacrifice by sending him to university.

For each year of the full-time undergraduate programme there is a scholarship of £1,000 which is awarded to the student who has the best performance in the preceding year and who satisfies certain financial criteria.

The scholarships are named as follows:

1st year: Woon Tai Jee Memorial Prize
2nd year: Lim Ai Fang Memorial Prize
3rd year: Cheong Kam Hee Memorial Prize
4th year: Woon Brothers Foundation Prize

The following students were awarded the scholarships for 2010-11:

1st year: Christopher Rowe
2nd year: Saqib Aslam
3rd year: Vanessa Bowern
4th year: Robert Marshall

When asked what the scholarship meant to him, Saqib Aslam said, "Being awarded the Woon scholarship means a lot to me. It has shown me that hard work does have its rewards, and has motivated me to work even harder to be the best that I can be."

Christopher Rowe said, "Such a prestigious award has instilled confidence in me, whilst enabling me to extend my resources significantly."

Mick Woodley, Associate Dean at Northumbria School of Law, said "The School greatly values the contribution made by the Woon Foundation to the ability of students to fund their studies.  Mr Woon himself stands as an object lesson to all students of how hard work and determination allied to intellectual ability can enable them to succeed at their chosen profession."
