Biography

Deveral is the Director of Strategic Development at Northumbria Law School. After studying law at undergraduate and masters level  Deveral completed the Bar Vocational Course and was called to the Bar by Inner Temple in 1995. He joined Northumbria University in 1997 as a Law Lecturer and was promoted through Senior Law Lecturer to the position of Principal Law Lecturer, which he currently holds.  

During his time at Northumbria, Deveral has taught all of the elements delivered on the bar course and also contract law on the undergraduate programme.  He now specialises in e-commerce law and advocacy skills.  

His research interests are varied and Deveral has presented papers and published widely - both books and articles - in the fields of contract law, e-commerce, e-learning, legal education and legal skills.

Regarding administrative responsibilities, Deveral was the programme leader for Northumbria’s BVC and Director of Bar Programmes for 10 years until 2011. He was, between 1998 and 2007, responsible for IT within the Law School and introduced many online legal research methods and online lectures to Northumbria’s law programmes. As a result of his expertise with information technology and e-learning Deveral was invited to be an e-learning consultant for Oxford University Press and chaired the University’s E-learning and Distance Learning Enhancement Group for 5 years.

Deveral is a practising barrister and holds a door tenancy at Trinity Chambers in Newcastle.  

He is an external examiner for the Solicitors Regulation Authority and also the Bar Standards Board. He is also a moderator for the Association of International Accountants. Deveral sits on the Advocacy Training Council and is an accredited ‘trainer of trainers’.  

Deveral is a member of the Steering Committee for the Legal Education and Training Review. This is the most extensive review of legal education since 1971 and is due to report in December 2012.
