What was it about the course / subject area that particularly appealed?
I wanted to study BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science at Northumbria University because it is an accredited degree by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). The degree also enables a graduate to become a registered Biomedical Scientist in the NHS (National Health Service). The course provides a good foundation in various fields of biomedical science which allows one to pursue a career in various sectors including research and industry.
What qualifications did you have?
I have a high school diploma and I have just received my Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Sciences.
What do you like most about the course?
I like the degree emphasis on both the theory and practical aspects of biomedical sciences. The hands on education has helped my laboratory skills. I also like group projects that the degree offers which has enhanced my communication skills and you also get to meet new people.
Can you give an example of a piece of work you have been involved with?
After completing my placement in the Freeman Hospital I had the opportunity to do my final year project in the research department.
How do you get on with your tutors?
I get on with my tutors well. I have had the same tutor throughout my degree. He has supported, guided and encouraged me.
Did you have the opportunity for any work placements during your course?
Yes I had the opportunity to go on a placement during my course. I did my placement at Freeman Hospital. I applied for it through the School of Life Sciences. They sent my CV and I was shortlisted for an interview.
What sort of work are you doing on your work placement?
During my placement, I had the opportunity to complete my IBMS generic competency portfolio. In the department I worked in respiratory, mycology, serology, wound/gynae, urine and blood culture section.
Have you enjoyed your placement?
Yes, I enjoyed my placement. All the staff were approachable and guided me in the right direction when I needed help and support. The training I received was very good and at the end of my placement I was able to get the IBMS Certificate of Competence.
Has your placement benefited you? If so how?
My placement has definitely helped me. The placement enabled me to enhance my laboratory skills and understand the significance of identifying pathogenic organisms and how this relates to treatment of patients. During my time at university I studied the theory of laboratory medicine. My depth of understanding of this topic has been enhanced by a year of practical application in a busy hospital microbiology laboratory.
Would you recommend a placement to other students?
I would highly recommend a placement to all students.
What are you doing now?
I am working as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying for your course, or for university in general?
Being an international student, I would advise a prospective international student to make sure they apply for accommodation before they come to the United Kingdom.

I really enjoyed my time at Northumbria University.
