The notion of apprenticeship is exemplified in Newcastle Business School's pioneering and award winning Graduate Tutor Scheme. The Graduate Tutor Scheme was established in 2005 to support Newcastle Business School’s strategy to develop talented individuals with the potential to become academic staff.

In 2007 the scheme was shortlisted for the Times Higher Education Supplement award for outstanding support to early career researchers. Additionally the scheme, or equivalent, has been adopted in other Schools at Northumbria University, and at Oxford Brookes University and Kingston University.

Which Postgraduate Research Programme is suitable for me?

Students applying to Newcastle Business School have a choice of three doctoral programmes: PhD, DBA or DBL

The PhD programme is the traditional route to a doctoral qualification and allows students to undertake an individual programme of research development that involves a detailed investigation of a business and management area, culminating in an original contribution to knowledge.

Both the DBA and DBL programmes are equivalent in standing to a PhD, but have a different research focus and outcome. Beginning with a structured taught element, the research investigation focuses on a business and management problem or opportunity and makes a contribution to the enhancement of professional and personal practice. These programmes are the logical choice for experienced professionals who wish to continue their lifelong learning.
