Strategic Management and International Business
Economic rationalisation, socio-cultural and technological change, sustainability and environmental pressures together with the rapid rise of new economic powers outside of the western hemisphere have focussed the attention of managers, academics and those involved in public policy on the areas of strategic management and international business in an unprecedented manner. Firms urgently need to transform their businesses and take a long-term strategic perspective to adequately adapt to the realities of an increasingly interconnected global business environment that invariably brings heightened levels of competition. Against this background, the Strategic Management and International Business subject group has a range of research and practice-based expertise to assist organisations and prepare students for the challenges presented in the contemporary business world. Current research projects centre on macro issues, including institutional and regulatory structures, in the UK, Europe and China.
The subject group is divided into two sub-groups – strategic management (headed by Professor Peter Galvin) and international business (headed by Professor Joanne Roberts). The strategic management team have expertise in:
- Competitive dynamics
- Alliances and interorganisational networks
- Strategic change
- Innovation at both the firm and regional level
- Entrepreneurship and small business management
- The underpinnings of superior performance
The international business team have expertise in:
- Economic growth, development and policy
- Foreign direct investment
- The internationalisation of firms
- Market Entry mode choices
- Internationalisation of higher education
- Knowledge and learning in international organisations
- Corporate governance and business ethics in a global context
The subject group’s distinctiveness is its focus upon the breadth of stakeholders that are impacted by business decisions rather than centring entirely upon firms. This wider perspective leads to research that invariably integrates socio-cultural impacts upon society. Although research and consultancy within the subject group has a strong grounding within the local area – particularly with smaller and entrepreneurial firms – it is increasingly simultaneously investigating research issues across Europe and the Far East. The international capabilities of the subject group are underpinned by its highly international membership.
