School of Applied Sciences

Welcome to the School of Applied Sciences

providing a dynamic, innovative and confident environment for success

The School of Applied Sciences is a dynamic and innovative School that brings together research and teaching expertise in biological, biomedical, chemical, food and forensic sciences, disaster management, geography and environmental management to focus on the study and advancement of physical, biological, chemical and societal processes that support the sustainable well-being of the planet.

We have a reputation for excellent teaching and pride ourselves on delivering a diversity of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, which are informed by up-to-date research and professional practice and are delivered in a friendly and supportive environment. Our programmes have an emphasis on hands-on experience, whether this be within our high quality laboratory facilities, out in the field or in the work place. The success of our provision is demonstrated by our graduate employment rates, our National Student Survey results and the professional accreditations held by our programmes.

The School of Applied Sciences has a growing research and enterprise reputation, with significant activity across our subject areas demonstrated by strong track record in output and income generation.  We encourage and foster a culture of high-quality research, for both staff and students.

The School is involved in a wide range of regional, national and international research activities, working collaboratively with many external organisations, government agencies and funding bodies to ensure our projects are focused on the application of science or support policy and practice.  The Applied Sciences research culture is embedded in each of our academic subject disciplines as well as our postgraduate research student community.
