Research
My research interests focused initially on the transport of water and ions in biological systems. This activity led to a major study of the literature summarized in my Physiological Society monograph Water Transport in Cells and Tissues, published by Edward Arnold in 1974. Then I began to work on the release and actions of transmitters at synapses on gland cells. Again, I wrote reviews of the literature to accompany my experimental work. These solicited reviews appeared in Annual Reviews of Biophysics and Bioengineering and Biological Reviews. My last major field of experimental work was devoted to a study of the role of second messengers in the activation of mammalian eggs during fertilization.
