Geography and Environment

Applied Sciences - G&E montage
Geography brings together internationally-recognised expertise in human and physical geography to enhance knowledge in these areas and provide you with key skills and understanding that will help you not only gain employment in a wide variety of related fields but also develop an informed concern about the earth and its people.

Geography is unique in being able to offer you the ability to learn about the wide range of economic, environmental, social, political and cultural processes impacting upon today’s world, and how and why they - and the effects and responses to them - vary across time and space. Heightened awareness of such issues as climate change, poverty and wealth generation, migration and cultural diversity, globalisation and trade, employment and technology, crime and regeneration, management challenges (of environmental and human resources and demands) and the sustainable future of our planet make Geography one of the most relevant subjects for today’s graduates.

At Northumbria we have been offering high quality undergraduate degrees in Geography for over 30 years and the popularity and success of our courses continues to be evidenced by our consistent top-ten standing in the National Student Survey for these courses in the last three years.

We offer four alternative degrees with a significant geography component. These include our new Crime Science BSc (Hons) degree and our two single honours degrees in Geography with the choice of either Geography (Human) BA (Hons) or Geography (Physical) BSc (Hons) as well as our joint honours degree, Geography and Environmental Management BSc (Hons). These degrees have been designed to include enough common first year Geography elements to enable you to move between courses, if you wish to do so, at the end of year one.

Environmental Management combines the disciplines of physical and social sciences to provide a challenging perspective on the complex environmental issues facing our world today. At the heart of our interests are the links between people and the environment. Environmental Management was established at Northumbria over 30 years ago and since then we have gone from strength to strength, often breaking new ground with innovative degrees, such as the Disaster Management and Sustainable Development MSc, supported by our Disaster and Development Centre (DDC). Courses are led by staff with a national and international reputation for expertise in the fields of sustainable development, ecology, environmental science and health, disaster management and global environmental issues.

An ongoing staff involvement with both consultancy and research brings relevance and interest into the classroom and the success of our courses has been demonstrated by our consistent top-ten standing in the National Student Survey for the last three years.

Our goal is to instil students with the knowledge and ability to think critically and creatively about environmental issues, providing the fundamentals required for a successful professional career. In addition to our Masters degree in Disaster Management, we offer three alternative undergraduate degrees in the broad field of environment. These include our two Environmental degrees: Environmental Management BSc (Hons) and Environmental Health BSc (Hons). The former will prepare you for careers in the effective management of environmental resources, whilst the latter sets you on the path towards becoming a registered Environmental Health Practitioner. There is also a popular joint degree, namely the Geography and Environmental Management BSc (Hons).
