We specialise in applied research and we have a number of internationally recognised researchers leading a dynamic research culture.

Biomolecular and Biomedical Research Centre (BioReC)
The Biomolecular and Biomedical Research Centre has around 30 academic staff including 5 Research Professors and 2 Readers. In addition, the Research Centre has a number of Visiting Professors and Visiting Fellows and Post-doctoral Research Fellows as well as more than 60 students registered for MRes, MPhil, PhD and ProfDoc degrees.
The research centre is housed in Ellison Building A block and consists of newly refurbished (SRIF-funded) laboratories and scientific equipment.
The research activities of the Biomolecular and Biomedical Research Centre fall into four groups:

Sustainable Futures
Research within Geography and Environmental Management takes place within a framework with a central concern for Sustainable Futures. Work within the disciplines is concerned with the community, social and environmental resilience, gender, ethnicity, security and physical and mental health. Many staff specialise in risk and disaster management, disaster resilience and economic development, both within Britain and on a global scale, supporting the work of our Disaster and Development Centre (DDC).

Northumbria University Centre for Forensic Science (NUCFS)
The Northumbria University Centre for Forensic Science was formally created on 1 January 2010 with clear and ambitious mandate as its statement of purpose to provide users, practitioners and policy makers with insight, analysis and opportunities to improve decision making about the current role, future potential and ethical implications of the use of forensic science and technology for the administration of justice and in other public services such as public health, environmental protection and border control.
