Visual and Material Culture Research Group

Visual and Material Culture Group

The Visual and Material Culture group brings together the research of a number of members of the Department of Arts at Northumbria whose primary interests lie in the histories of art, design, architecture and fashion of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Britain, Europe and North America. The group also encompasses the wider departmental community of Visiting Fellows and postgraduate students whose research engages with the visual and material cultures of this period.

Within this broader remit are a number of more specific shared research interests such as: Collecting and patronage in the 1920s and 30s; Geographies of space, place and landscape; Transnationalism in visual and material culture; Transformations of Pre-Raphaelitism; Inter-war art and design in Britain.

The group seeks to strengthen and build upon existing individual and shared interests as well as providing a dynamic and supportive forum where innovation, exploration and collaboration in research into visual and material culture is actively encouraged. Please visit the research page and members' individual profile pages for further details on research expertise and related publications.
