English Literature, Linguistics & Creative Writing
These are exciting times for English Literature, Linguistics &
Creative Writing at Northumbria. As a result of the popularity of our
degrees and the University’s investment in research excellence, we have
expanded rapidly in t
he last few years. We currently have 32 lecturers across our three main areas of
English Literature, English Language and Linguistics, and Creative Writing.
Our success means that we are now able to offer a wide range of exciting
modules and degrees.
You will be able to learn about the richness and diversity of English in a variety of contexts to suit your own interests, whilst developing the skills which will serve you well for graduate employment. You will also benefit from joining a vibrant research culture and from being taught by staff in literature and linguistics who are at the cutting edge of their subjects, and by creative writers who are all recognized authors. All of our optional modules are informed by staff research interests and expertise, and are designed to engage students with the latest research carried out in the discipline.
Northumbria is an exciting university in a dynamic and lively city, giving you an excellent education in a friendly and culturally enriching environment. As an English student here, you will find yourself being guided by staff who are committed to helping you develop your skills to your full potential. We were rated as ‘excellent’ for our teaching in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA) exercise and are prominently involved in the University’s Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). We have also received positive feedback from our current students through the National Student Survey.
At all levels, students receive guidance tutorials to meet their individual learning needs, and all our degrees incorporate training in employability skills. As a results, students leave us well prepared for a range of potential career options, including teaching, local government, journalism and marketing.
