Linguistics and English Language

Linguistics at Northumbria is a well-established and expanding discipline. We have a thriving research environment with particular strengths in cognitive linguistics, applied linguistics including TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) and discourse analysis. While most of our research focuses on English (including historical varieties and world Englishes), many of our staff members also work on (or have an active interest in) a variety of other languages, including  Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, French, German and Polish.

Our wide range of expertise is reflected in the courses we offer. Whether taken as a single honours degree (BA English Language) or combined with English Literature or TESOL, our undergraduate programmes offer a wide variety of modules covering the structural, theoretical, sociolinguistic and historical dimensions of language study. We also offer masters programmes in linguistics, applied linguistics, TESOL and cognitive linguistics and we welcome applications for doctoral study.

The linguistics subject group has a strong international orientation. We have large numbers of international students and we foster vibrant teaching links with universities and HE institutions in China, Japan, Korea, Libya, Taiwan and Vietnam. Our staff members are involved in collaborative projects with researchers from around the globe and currently play key roles in several national and international organizations, including IATEFL (International Association of Teacher of English as a Foreign Language), ICLA (International Cognitive Linguistics Association) and UK-CLA (UK Cognitive Linguistics Association). Northumbria is also home to Cognitive Linguistics, one of the leading international journals devoted to language study.
