History

The Historians at Northumbria pride themselves in offering a number of exciting and innovative undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in History. After a number of new appointments there are 18 History staff in the School, teaching a wide range of modules.

Coming to an excellent university in a dynamic and lively city provides students with both educational opportunity and cultural excitement to enrich their lives. History students at Northumbria find themselves settling into a friendly department whose staff are totally committed to helping them make the most of their opportunities.

History programmes cover a wide-range of subject matter, over large spans of time and significant geographical range. You will also benefit from joining a vibrant research culture and from being taught by staff who are at the cutting edge of their subjects. All of our optional modules are informed by staff research interests and expertise, and, as our seminars and conferences, are designed to engage students with the latest research carried out in the discipline of History.

In 2009, History degrees at Northumbria were once again revalidated for a full five years by a Periodic Review panel of Higher Education experts. We are justifiably proud of the positive response of the panel and their praise for the work we do on behalf of our students. More importantly, we can say with authority that students who choose History at Northumbria can feel confident in the programmes they will study.

Our caring and supportive approach is consistently acknowledged in the feedback we receive from our undergraduates: in 2009 we received a rating of 91% in the National Student Survey. Consequently, if you chose History at Northumbria you can expect to receive individual guidance tutorials designed to meet specific and individual learning needs. We also support you in the development of key skills and are involved in the University’s Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL).

We are also acknowledged as trend-setting innovators in the extent to which work placement and employability training features in our curriculum. Because of these innovations, our students leave us well prepared to face a world of challenges in diverse careers, from teaching and local government, to journalism and marketing.
