Transnational Research Group

We have core strengths in international and transnational history, with key emphases on foreign relations, cultural interaction and communication across national boundaries. The Atlantic World provides the focus for current research expertise in British, Irish and American history. Within this context, the team is undertaking research on the global impact of Guy Fawkes Night celebrations, the Orange Order world-wide, international followers of Leo Tolstoy, Scottish associational culture in the diaspora, and contemporary Anglo-American and Irish-American diplomatic relations. Recent books include A Historical Dictionary of Anglo-American Relations, The Black Hand of Republicanism, an edited collection that includes essays on Fenianism in its diasporic, transnational and imperial context, and Ties of Bluid, Kin and Countrie, the first volume of its kind to collectively examine Scottish associational culture in the diaspora. Please visit the publications page for more information.

Several members of the Transnational Research group are also engaged in the Labour and Society Research group, focusing in particular on transnational perspectives, for instance through questions of ethnicity and migration, networks and class (a special issue of the Labour History Review on transnationalism, with contributions from group members, has recently been published). North America, the wider British World, Russia and Belgium are the main locations of interest.

Given the international focus of the group's research activities, research links exist with colleagues in North America, Continetal Europe, Russia and Australasia. Key research links also exist with colleagues from Newcastle University, especially through the Labour and Society Research group, but also the Americas Research group at Newcastle.

Please visit our sections on members and activities & events for more details.
