US History Group

Northumbria University has one of the largest history teams in the UK dedicated to the study of the United States. Four specialists in US history head the group, and several history staff have research interests in US history that intersect.

The members of this group have particular research strengths in the in connections between US history and race, diplomacy presidential politics, transnational culture and ideas. Please visit the research page for further details. The group welcomes students to work with its members to craft research projects in similar fields and contribute to a growing North East community interested in the United States.

Moreover, the group is active in coordinating seminar papers, symposia, and international conferences.  Members of the group have forged significant connections between Northumbria and foreign research centres, including many in the US, while working to encourage the study of the US in the North East through outreach to schools, museums, and libraries.

The strength in US History is also reflected in the substantial research holdings available for students and staff. Central sources include:

  • Records of the Antebellum Southern Plantations
  • Despatches from US Consuls in Ireland
  • American Civil War: Letters and Diaries
  • Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) Papers
  • Huey Newton Foundation Papers (Black Panther Party Files)
  • Civil Rights during the Johnson Administration, 1963-1969 (Parts I-V
  • FBI Files on Black Extremist Organizations
  • 19th and 20th Century US Newspapers
