Biography

Before joining Northumbria University I held a research position and was a p/t teaching staff at Linguistics and English Language department of Lancaster University where I also finished my PhD in Discourse Studies. I was involved in the ESRC funded research project RASIM as a researcher and taught on a range of courses including Critical Discourse Analysis, Qualitative Methods of Text and Discourse Analysis, Analysing Media, Language of Advertising, Corporate Communication, and Language in Society.

Research Interests

My areas of academic interest generally lie in theory, methods and application of Critical Discourse Analysis in a range of topics. I am interested in the representation of various social/political collective identities e.g. ethnic, religious, national, class, gender identities as well as  the representation of events/issues/entities e.g. racism/discrimination, political conflicts, wars/unrests, forms of protests, Olympics, cities and countries in media discourses of various genres: press, TV, adverts, movies, New Media etc.

Within the past few years I have been focused on representation of migrants as a social group in the British newspapers. I am interested in construction of ‘Self’ and ‘Other’ identity, and de/legitimacy within national and international levels. Generally speaking I look at the interplay of discourse, ideology and power in mass media as the mediator between language and society.

Postgraduate Supervision

I am interested in supervising PhD projects in Critical Discourse Analysis with a socio-political or socio-historical approach in areas such as discourse and discrimination/racism, discourse and social/political identities e.g. immigration, discourse and international conflicts in media e.g. the Middle East conflict, Self and Other representation in political inter/national debates, interplay of mass communication and political institutions, expression/construction of identity in New Media e.g. Facebook, advertising and social stereotypes etc.
