Biography


Tanya joined the University of Northumbria in October of 2010. Previously, for nearly five years, she was a deputy sheriff and police officer, which included working in a maximum-security county jail and patrolling a small town. Tanya then served for two years as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine. During that time, she wrote grants and designed programs to prevent the trafficking of women.

Research and Consultancy


Research Interests

Tanya is interested in all things relating to green criminology, particularly the illegal wildlife trade, but also smuggling and theft of other natural resources. Her future research plans include examination of industrial agricultural, animal welfare, and food-borne illnesses. Additionally, Tanya is interested in the intersection of green crimes and human and national security, transnational crime, and organized crime.

Tanya's paper at the Stockholm Criminology Symposium 2010 on the illegal charcoal trade in Cambodia was chosen as a highlight of the conference. 

Tanya is interested in supervising doctoral students on topics related to green criminology such as, but not limited to, wildlife crime, animal welfare, pollution and environmental security. Research can also focus on discriminatory access to healthy environmental and natural resources.

Principal Investigator on the ESRC Green Crime Research Seminar Series beginning October 2012

Tanya is in the early stages of designing a research study on the poaching of game meat in the UK and the implications for food safety.
