Graduate Employment

Graduate EmploymentStudents graduating from the Department of Social Sciences have a range of valuable skills including critical thinking skills, written and oral communication skills, the ability to analyse social, political and economic trends, problem solving skills and the ability to work independently or in a team.

Our graduates go on to gain employment in a wide variety of contexts including the voluntary sector; local government; the civil service; the European Commission; the Police; the Probation Service; journalism; research, teaching and lecturing, as well as management posts in a range of public and private sector organisations.

Increasingly, many of our students choose to undertake further study at postgraduate level at Northumbria and other Universities across the UK, and are fully supported by staff throughout the application process.

We are committed to enhancing the employability of all our students in order to ensure that they secure a place in the graduate labour market. Each student works closely with his or her Guidance Tutor throughout the three years of study in order to track the development of skills, enhance learning performance and prepare for the world of work. Staff liaise regularly with the University Careers Service to ensure that students receive the best possible advice concerning the opportunities available to them. All students undertake employability modules, and Employers' Panels, established to advise the different subject groups within the Department, provide guidance and advice on the development of employment-related skills.
