30th Anniversary Gerry Hedley Student Symposium

"Continuing the Legacy: Current topics furthering Gerry Hedley's research"

Tate Britain 11-13 June 2012
Presented by Northumbria University with kind support from Tate

The next Gerry Hedley Student Symposium is the 30th Anniversary!

To celebrate this achievement and in recognition of the appreciable contribution more than 400 students from the Hamilton Kerr Institute, the Courtauld Institute, and Northumbria University programmes have made, it is intended to hold a three day event at Tate Britain, 11-13 June 2012.

Presentations by qualified conservators will be given on 11th and 12th June followed by the traditional day of current students' research on 13th June. During the first two days, a wide range of themes will be covered with sessions on a variety of topics including practical treatment issues, painting materials and techniques, career and education, disaster planning, and the conservation of modern and contemporary art. The symposium will also reflect on Gerry Hedley's great contribution to the field.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the symposium we invite former students of the conservation training programs at the Courtauld Institute, Hamilton Kerr Institute and Northumbria University to submit a short resume of their student projects and past and current career details.  We hope to reconnect graduates and celebrate their many and diverse achievements. Biographical entries can be submitted via email to:az.ghsymposium2012@northumbria.ac.uk

Current submitted biographies can be found here.

Tickets: Full price £60 for 3 day admission. Student price £45 admission only; £50 any two days or £30 any one day.

The online booking system is now open, to purchase tickets click here

Call for Papers: "Continuing the Legacy: Current topics furthering Gerry Hedley's research"

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Gerry Hedley Student Symposium, papers will be sought from both recent graduates and professionals to be presented alongside those traditionally given by student speakers.

Papers will be presented by students in the traditional manner for one day of the symposium. For the other two days we are seeking papers from professionals.

On the professional days, presentations of 5, 10 and 20 minutes will be grouped into hour-long sessions according to a shared theme and will be directed by a chair person. By having shorter papers the organisers hope to increase participation from ex-students and professionals. Probable topics for the symposium include cleaning of acrylic paintings, conservation of modern and contemporary art, conservation education, preventive conservation and loans.

A run through of this format was held at Tate Britain on 7th February. Proceedings from this event are available here.

The closing date for abstract submissions has been extended. A form and guidelines are available at the top right hand side of this page.
