Turner Prize Alumni

As the Turner Prize leaves London for only the second time in its history one of the artists nominated will be returning to familiar surroundings.

Hilary Lloyd, a film and video artist has been nominated for the prestigious award studied BA Fine Art at Newcastle Polytechnic, which was a forerunner to what is now Northumbria University.

The Turner Prize exhibition is being held at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art on Gateshead Quay and Hilary will be exhibiting screens and projections of snatched footage of shapes including the moon and a tower block, which form patterns as they are displayed in rows and grids.

The decision to hold the exhibition at BALTIC is fantastic news for the burgeoning art scene in the regions, director of BALTIC, Godfrey Worsdale commented, “The idea of the Turner Prize travelling the regions, alternate years maybe, is a real shot in the arm for the prize, it’s taking it to new audiences, it's a new phase in its life.”

Hilary is nominated alongside three other artists, Karla Black, Martin Boyce and George Shaw with the winner receiving a £25,000 prize and the exhibition is expected to be seen by in the region of 70,000 – 90,000 people during its run.
