Conflict

Research into the dynamics of conflict cuts across all academic disciplines in the Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences. Our cutting-edge teaching and research programmes address the costs and consequences of conflict as they impact on societies in transition, on international relations, on the environment, on nation states, and interpersonally on individuals and communities.

Issue 5:
Gender

The Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences has a long history of addressing issues around gender and sexuality. Our staff's research on gender feeds into their teaching across the humanities, arts and social sciences. Most of our degree programmes feature aspects of academic work on gender studies, in terms of social and cultural theory, material politics or visual and literary representation.

Issue 4:
The Department of Media

The Department of Media is one of the most well-established media departments among Britain's universities. The Department is equipped with state-of-the-art production tools, to reflect the needs of students. Our staff is engaged in a wide variety of research, enterprise, consultancy and professional activities which reflect and enhance the Media Department's standing in the academic community. We also boast among our staff a high proportion of industry practitioners, from film-makers to scriptwriters, from TV producers to print journalists. All have a wealth of experience and their extensive contacts ensure a regular flow of impressive guest lectures at Northumbria.

Issue 3:
The Department of Humanities

The Department of Humanities incorporates English Literature, Language, Linguistics, Creative Writing and History. Drawing on the expertise of 62 academic staff, the Department promotes quality, diversity and innovation in research and teaching across creative writing, English language, literary culture, and national and international history.

Issue 2:
The Department of Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences incorporates the disciplines of criminology, politics, public policy and sociology. It is home to 45 academic staff and the Centre for Public Policy, the Departments' applied research and enterprise centre. Knowledge exchange, high quality research and enterprise activity and the delivery of professional development are our key strengths.

The Department of Arts

The Department of Arts is a leading centre for supporting and energising creative practice and academic study. Newcastle upon Type, a vibrant city with a flourishing visual and performing arts scene and home to numerous creative and cultural venues, contributes to the main aim of the Department: to make a difference to the artistic and cultural landscape through dedicated research and scholarly activity.
