School of Design
Welcome to the School of Design at Northumbria University
A thriving design community with more that 1200 students and almost 100 staff, our school has an international reputation for innovation and real world creativity.
We started out over 150 years ago and since then hundreds of thousands of students have come through our doors and gone on to pursue successful careers in design.
We are justifiably proud of this track record and make no apologies saying that when it comes to education - we believe we have a lot more to offer than most.
World's Most Influential
We often say that when it comes to design education
we believe we’ve got a lot more to offer than most. Well, now we know
it’s true as Jonathan Ive and Tim Brown, both educated at the School of
Design, have just been named in Business Week’s list of the World’s Most Influential Designers.
For more information on Jonathan and Tim and some of our other illustrious alumni click here.

New Decade, New Dean
For us, 2010 not only marks the beginning of a new
decade, but the start of an exciting new era as we have been joined by our
new Dean, Steven Kyffin.
Steven, previously Senior Global Director of Design Research at Phillips,
is also a graduate of the School so we're glad to welcome him back to lead
us through a new decade of inspirational new developments in design
education, practice and research.
And the winner is...
So far the school has won 3 RSA Design Directions awards and 2 prestigious Yellow Pencil Awards at D&AD. The school also picked up 4 awards at Graduate Fashion Week including the coveted Fashion Innovation Award and one further award was presented to one of our final year Fashion Design students by Max Mara. 5 of our Graphics students were awarded membership at the ISDT awards and to top this all of, we received 4 awards at New Designers including New Designer of the Year.
