East meets West Collaboration to Showcase at Jakarta Fashion Week

Northumbria School of Design Senior Lecturers, Thomas Greenough and Tony Brotheridge launched a global fashion project with Collaborative Partner, BINUS University, to enable students from both Universities to work together.

Students from both Universities competed to design a 4-look garment and fabric collection inspired by the traditional ‘ikat’ motif from East Nusa Tenggara combined with their own contemporary twist.

The winning students from Northumbria School of Design, Daniel Fradgley and Victoria Schofield will travel to Lombok to collaborate with the winning BINUS students to combine and finalise their designs, to enable a strong cohesion between the collections which will showcase on the catwalk at Jarkata Fashion Week.

The word ‘ikat’ means ‘to bind’ and is an ancient way of creating designs and motifs in fabric by resist-dyeing the threads before the fabric is woven.
