Students chosen as Red Bull Canimation Finalists

Motion Graphics and Animation Design students, Michele Svaeren and David Burnett, were selected as finalist in this year’s Red Bull Canimation Competition.

Canimation is a nationwide search for talented animators, open to anyone and carries only one rule: for entries to be imaginative sketches centred on the Red Bull blue and silver can. Animators submitted their entries to one of the following specialist categories; CGI, Stop Motion or Drawn.

All entries were added to the Red Bull website and the general public cast their votes on their favourite animations. The top 10 from each category were then put in front of a panel of famous animators who made the final casting vote to decide the winners. Winners bagged a selection of prizes including work placements with Aardman, The Mill and 12footsix.

Michele, entered the CGI category, showing a Red Bull transforming into an aeroplane and then back into the original can, centred around the concept that Red Bull ‘makes life just a little bit more exciting’. Chosen as one of the best animations, Michele was featured on Channel 4.

David, created a Stop Motion sketch using the Red Bull can as a puppet. Throughout the Sketch the puppet is trying to think up a new slogan for Red Bull, finally deciding on ‘it’s Inc-RED-i-BULL’.

The best animators including Michele were interviewed for a short film which has been shown on Channel 4 and in cinemas nationwide.
