Breaking the Silence : Animating the Violence
Domestic Violence, Forced Marriage and Sexual Assault... They're conversation stoppers in any language. Ellie Land and War Child are trying to start one in North Eastern Uganda.
Last year Ellie Land, award winning animator and Senior Lecturer in Motion Graphics and Animation Design, spent a week with communities in Karamoja making animations to raise awareness about gender based violence. Women and girls in Karamoja have a very low social status leaving them open to abuse and exploitation. Few people are aware of the laws to protect them or what to do if violence occurs.
Working with War Child - http://www.warchild.org.uk/, a UK based charity that provides life changing support to the most vulnerable children whose families, communities and schools have been torn apart by war. Ellie helped young people in Karamoja to express their feelings about the issues that are really affecting them before creating an animation to encourage communities to report cases of abuse and tackle impunity.
