“Articulating Design Thinking”
On the 18th and 19th April 2012, the School of Design, Northumbria University will host the Design Thinking Research Symposium 2012 (DTRS 2012).  The symposium entitled, “Articulating Design Thinking”, will be run along similar (but different) lines to the workshop-based events that we have seen in past DTRS and related events such as the “Delft Protocols” in 1994, the DTRS7 event “Analysing Design Meetings” in London in 2007, and the “Studying Professional Software Designers” workshop held at the University of California, Irvine in 2010 wherein a number of invited workshop delegates were asked to respond to a given common set of data (i.e. video recordings and transcripts).

This time DTRS 2012 researchers were asked to set up their own formal studies and were asked for their responses to a common design brief. The aim here in this novel approach is to get a diverse set of different perspectives on the analysis of design thinking and action that would be complementary to previous analyses. That is, we are interested in articulating not only different analyses of sets of data, but in the different approaches to design activity via the set common design brief. In other words, we were interested in using a generic design brief to generate a variety of data sets and their subsequent analyses.
