Perspectives on Social Innovation for Community Engagement - Workshop
School of Design City Campus East, Northumbria University
Thursday 7th July 2011
The use of design to address social, environmental, economic and political issues is termed ‘Socially Responsible Design’. Social responsibility, in the context of design solution development, is to make decisions and take actions that will enhance the welfare and interests of society as well as the collaborating agencies.
But socially responsible designing through social innovation is a complex issue that involves multi-disciplinary stakeholders. So how do different disciplines rise to the challenge? What dynamics within multi-disciplinary environments affect social innovation? This workshop is an opportunity to look at a variety of perspectives in this developing field with a view to generating a shared sense of opportunity and collaboration.
Professor Robert Young, Professor of Design Practice oversaw the workshop proceedings on the day.
