Learning and Teaching

The School of Health Community and Education Studies (HCES) has a large population of nearly 8000 students from diverse backgrounds and our learning community includes our Regional partners in the Health, Social Care and Education sectors.

Learning + teaching in the School of Health Community and Education Studies

At Coach Lane, the Students’ Union has a vibrant social learning space, the ‘Student Hub’, which provides informal access to PCs and seating for socialising, studying and networking. An additional informal area with PC access for postgraduate students is located in the School Community Health and Education Studies Research Centre. The HCES student learning environment extends beyond Coach Lane Campus into the placement and workplace setting. Many of our students spend up to 50% of their time on placement and an increasing number of work- based and distance learning students rarely visit Coach Lane but learn in their workplace or home. We have increasing numbers of part-time students who combine study with full time employment and our attendance patterns extend across the core day into the evenings and weekends.

Stakeholders in our learning community include many individuals other than campus based academic, administrative and support staff. We rely on our partnerships with service users, carers, practice mentors, educators and assessors to create a rich and inspiring learning environment for our students.
