Bob Giddings studied Architecture at Newcastle University winning two
prizes in design competitions. His interest in the integration of design
and management led to a Postgraduate Diploma in Management and membership
of the Chartered Institute of Building. A Master of Arts in Urban Studies
was followed by a Doctorate in Architecture and Urban Design from the
Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies at the University of York.
Before university, Bob was employed as a Building Technologist in London
but has since worked with a number of award-winning architectural
practices. He enjoyed five years as a part-time tutor at Newcastle School
of Architecture before joining the School of the Built Environment. He has
pioneered the development of three innovative degree courses, including
Architectural Design and Management, and continues to teach Design to a
variety of student groups.
Bob was School Research Director for ten years and supervises PhD
candidates. His own research in Architectural Design Methodology and Urban
Design has produced conference papers in Athens, Delft, Hong Kong,
Pretoria, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tel-Aviv, Venice and Vienna; as well as
international conference papers for universities in this country at
Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford and Sheffield. He has published a number of
academic journal papers and a book with Margaret Horne on architectural
representation, titled Artists’ Impressions in Architectural Design. He is
a lead examiner for the Architects Registration Board, member of the
RIBA Validation Panel, and the CIOB Presidential Commission on the Future
of Education for the Construction Industry. Bob is subject specialist
reviewer for Architecture, Building and Surveying with the Quality
Assurance Agency; member of the judging panel for the CIOB International
Research and Innovation Awards, and the Advisory Panel of Experts for the
International Design and Environment Research Network. He
was a member of an International Jury for a city centre design competition
in Yugoslavia, and one of the founders of Northumbria University's
Sustainable Cities Research Institute. For the last three years he
has been Visiting Professor at Belgrade University Faculty of
Architecture.
When the weather is fine Bob enjoys piloting light aircraft from Newcastle
International Airport. He is keen on various styles of music, especially
jazz, and has fun improvising on the alto saxophone. He also plays flute
with the Tenth Avenue Band at numerous events in this country and abroad.
