As part of School’s Senior Management Group I am Associate Dean for
Research, Enterprise and Innovation. I am also Director of the Sustainable
Cities Research Institute and Professor of Construction Management.
I graduated from Cambridge University with a BA (Hons.) in 1973. My
postgraduate qualifications include an MSc. in Construction Management from
Herriot-Watt University, and a PhD from the Department of Construction
Engineering & Management, at Reading University. I became a
Member of the Chartered Institute of Building in 1978 and was elected to
Fellowship in 1992.
My professional background was in the Construction Industry, where I worked
for some 10 years as Site Engineer and Senior Estimator before entering
academia. My publications include 3 books and over 80 academic papers (some
featured below) on construction topics such as Risk Management, Contracts
and Procurement, and I am on the review panels and editorial boards of 14
peer-reviewed journals. I have obtained external research funding from the
Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and from
government agencies, such as the Department of Trade and Industry.
I currently supervise six PhD students; have supervised nine higher degrees
(2 MPhil, 7 PhD) to completion; and have been external examiner at 10
universities in the UK, 2 in France, and 1 in India.
I have worked in the Far East, Middle East and other parts of Europe, where
I have lectured and carried out consultancy work for over 20 industry and
professional organisations.
I was a National Committee Member of the Association of Researchers in
Construction Management (ARCOM) for many years, and served as Chairman of
the organisation between 2002 and 2004. I have been a member of the EPSRC
Peer Review College since 2003, and am External Assessor (Research)
for the City University Hong Kong. I have been a Board member of
Constructing Excellence [North East] (2003 – 2007); a Member of the
Partnering Management Group, North Tyneside Council (2000 – 2006); a
Member of North East Regional Academic Panel (2008 – date) and
external examiner on courses at Sheffield Hallam (2001 – 2006), Kingston
(2002 – 2006) and Reading (2009 – date) Universities.
My leisure pursuits include literature, languages, music (baroque to blues)
travel (emphasis on history, archaeology, cultures and people) and sport
(formerly rugby, cricket and squash, but now restricted to cycling, sailing
and a little golf).
