Chartered Environmentalist - Personal Carbon Footprint 8 Tons*

The Job - I get enormous satisfaction from being a university lecturer, it's very seasonal work - like being a farmer or tour rep. Students enrol, they learn things, they grow in confidence and ability, eventually they graduate and become rich and successful (in most cases). Many graduates become friends, or at least stop and chat when you meet them in the street. This is an exciting and rewarding process to be involved in.

Lecturing - My lecturing style is loosely based on Eddie Izzard (but without the frocks). I try to make things understandable and enjoyable. When I joined the School I taught construction technology and land economics. My teaching has evolved to incorporate my personal and research interests in sustainable development and design, specifically the module Sustainable Real Estate on the MSc Real Estate Management programme.

Research & Consultancy - My interest in sustainability has developed into consultancy work as a BREEAM assessor. BREEAM, the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method, provides a benchmark of environmental credentials for developers and design teams. Working with architects and engineers to improve the environmental performance of their buildings provides insights into current trends which can be incorporated into research and teaching.

I have given talks to many groups on Environmental Sustainability and as a result of my research and consultancy work over the past ten years, I have been elected as a Chartered Environmentalist in the Society for the Environment www.socenv.org.uk

*actually this isn't very good (but it is better than it was last year). I am taking active steps to reduce this and will keep a record on this site.
