Ian joined the University 10 years ago and the School quite recently.  He is a researcher who has worked at the University in the areas of industrial relations, the labour market, and sustainability.  Ian came from industry having owned his own printing business in the City of London – those were the days!!  Prior to that he worked at the Greater London Council as an economic development officer.

Ian entered academia in the glorious period of the late 70s early 80s when it really seemed that Tottenham Hotspur football club could build on their successes and, dare I say it, win the league.  History, the Tories and just bad luck changed all that.  He has a BA (Hons) in Social Science and an MSc in Quality Engineering.

His major area of research over the last few years has been the new Polish migration to the North of England and the response of trade unions.  This has involved work in the construction and food processing sectors.  He is currently undertaking an ESRC funded project ‘Cross Boarder Trade Union Collaboration and Polish Migrant Workers in Britain’, Grant number Res 000 – 22 – 2034.

Externally Ian is on the editorial board of Capital and Class.  He has also recently managed two international conferences at the University.  The British Universities Industrial Relations Annual conference in 2005 and the ‘20 years after the miners strike’ conference in 2004.  He also was part of the editorial team for the ‘Unions, communities and the 1984-5 Miners’ Strike’ (Capital and Class Special Issue, Vol.87. 2005) which was based on submissions to this latter conference.

Hobby-wise, Ian loves football but not the failures it brings, a good red wine and fillet steak and most importantly his growing family.  He often wishes he had more time to attend the theatre or other cultural activities but…

Roles and responsibilities

 Writing project proposals and leading as appropriate;
 liaising with clients through to project completion and beyond to obtain further work;
 regularly leading on final reports and policy recommendations;
 co-ordinating dissemination of project results at an academic, practitioner and community level as appropriate;
 establishing links, and participating in networks, at the national, European and international level;
 participating in academic and practitioner activities other than those that are project based.
