Building Opening Hours
During semester time all buildings are generally open for staff and students- 07.30 - 21.00 Monday to Thursday and
- 07.30 - 19.00 on Fridays (Lipman Gym 20.30 and 21.00 for Lipman Theatre during pre-planned Public Performances and Rehearsal Periods)
however, please also note the Caretaker's Locking-up Procedures as detailed
below.
Access to Buildings outside of Opening Hours
Week Days
Any member of staff who wishes to stay behind to carry on working after
21.00 (or 19.00 on Fridays) may do so by informing the duty caretaker who
comes around on his locking-up regime. The caretaker will then leave the
building at his allocated finishing time, locking the main doors but making
sure there are sufficient fire exits available and he will return the
building keys to the security control room (security office at CLC). When
staff want to leave they must advise security staff on x3999 so that the
latter can re-open the building to let staff out and then reset the burglar
alarm and lock the building.
Weekends
A number of buildings are open at weekends during semester time as below:
| Building | Saturday Opening Hours | Sunday Opening Hours |
| Ellison | 08.30 - 17.00 | CLOSED (From Semester 2 2008 open 10.00 – 16.-00) |
| Lipman | 09.00 - 14.00 | CLOSED |
| Lipman Gym | 09.00 - 17.30 | CLOSED |
| Library (City) | See Library web site | See Library web site |
| Library (CLC) | See Library web site | See Library web site |
| Sutherland | CLOSED | CLOSED |
| Trinity | 09.30 - 13.00 | CLOSED |
| Northumberland | 09.00 - 16.30 | CLOSED |
Any member of staff who wishes to work in buildings that are not published as being open must make prior arrangements with the relevant Facilities Team Leader to come in to work. Working before or beyond the hours above requires similar action. On arrival staff must call at the security control room (or security office at CLC) and as soon as they are available a member of security staff will accompany them to the building, let them in, unset the burglar alarm and ensure sufficient fire exits are available prior to locking the door behind the staff. When staff wish to leave they must advise Security on x3999 so that they can return to the building, allow the individual out and reset the burglar alarm. For buildings with access control once opened, there is no need to lock staff in and then let them out; however they must let Security know when they are leaving the premises.
(NOTE: this facility is also available to postgraduate research students provided we have authorisation from their Dean of School that they able to work in a building on their own unsupervised.)
Vacation Times
During vacation times some buildings are opened for shorter hours than
during the semester, generally in response to the reduced demand. The early
closing time does not prevent staff working beyond that time if they wish
to, there are two options for weekday and weekends:
Vacation Weekdays:
1) Staff can inform the duty caretaker that they wish to stay behind when he comes around locking up (as for weekdays above).
2) The building can be open on a weekday until the normal semester closing time, provided the facilities team leader gets one full working-day's notice.
Vacation Weekends:
3) Closed buildings can be accessed by individual staff, using the same arrangements as normal semester weekends
4) Buildings that are normally open on a weekend during semester time can be fully opened on vacation weekends provided it is agreed 14 days in advance of start of the vacation. Team leaders will prompt Schools for their requirements prior to vacations.
Caretaker's Locking up Procedures
Despite notified closing times of 21.00 in the interests of safety and security the caretakers currently commence locking up parts of the buildings from 17.00 onwards. From 18.00 hours they are constantly patrolling the building checking rooms, locking off classrooms that are not timetabled to be used, and checking that windows and doors are locked in other vacated areas. Once a full corridor is vacated the caretaker will lock off that corridor to prevent strangers or would be criminals wandering into empty areas. As they patrol the buildings they may look into offices asking people what time they are working to - PLEASE NOTE THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT STAFF HAVE TO LEAVE, an indication of what time areas will be vacated merely helps them to plan their locking up route and prevents them duplicating patrols.
The locking up procedures are carried out to protect the staff and students as well as the University equipment, no staff or students should feel that caretaking staff are "pushing them out" by locking up early that is not their intention, they are merely trying to protect the people and the contents of the building. The more areas that are secured in a building the safer it becomes. Following this procedure means that buildings are locked by 21.30 or 21.45, if we did not start locking-up until 21.00 a number of buildings would not be fully locked until midnight.
Our university has a good reputation for, which we wish to continue to build on as a good selling point to prospective students and parents. We believe that our current procedures contribute markedly to that good record.
