Asbestos
Asbestos poses a risk to human health if fibres are released into the air and breathed in. Due to this risk the University manages exposure to working with asbestos containing materials (ACMs) and has developed a comprehensive management plan for controlling exposure to asbestos.
Anyone, employee or contractor working on University Buildings who could disturb ACMs in the building fabric should (prior to any work) consult the Asbestos Management Plan which can be found at the above links. This applies to staff who may have to access ceiling voids, pipe work, boiler rooms, electrical insulations, work with ceiling tiles, floor tiles and doors. This is not a comprehensive list and all forms of work should not be carried out until the plan has been viewed and arrangements for access agreed with Estates Department, Health, Safety and Environment Office.
If you require any additional advice or information on ACMs please contact the University Health, Safety & Office on 0191 243 7318.
