No Smoking

From Sunday 1 July 2007 virtually all enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and workplaces in England will become smoke-free by law.

This will include offices, factories, shops, pubs, bars, restaurants, membership clubs, public transport and work vehicles used by more than one person. Failure to comply with the law will expose the employer or operator of the establishment to penalties of up to £2,500 for failing to prevent smoking inside their buildings or premises, with individual smokers facing spot fines of up to £50.

In order to comply with the law the University will from 1 July introduce a No-Smoking policy, and implement further restrictions to those already in place, to discourage and so reduce smoking across campus by staff, students and visitors:
  • all University owned, leased and operated premises including student halls of residence will become smoke-free
  • smoking will not be permitted at entrances to or in the immediate proximity of buildings or premises owned, leased or occupied by the University
  • smoking will not be permitted in vehicles owned or leased by the University
It is expected that many current smokers will now take the opportunity to give up the habit and stop smoking. The University understands that staff and students may need support and assistance in giving up smoking. There are a number of help options available:-
  • the University's Occupational Health Department will be able to advise on how to obtain support in giving up the habit.
  • the NHS provides a wide range of free resources and advice
  • you can call the free phone number 0800 1690169 to find you local NHS Stop Smoking Service or text 'give up' and your full post code to 880088
  • you can also visit the website www.gosmokefree.co.uk
a full copy of the No-Smoking Policy is attached at the link opposite.
