Eurostat Regional Yearbook 2009

Europe in figures – Eurostat yearbook 2009 – presents a comprehensive selection of statistical data on Europe. The yearbook may be viewed as an introduction to European statistics. Most data cover the period 1997–2007 for the European Union and some indicators are provided for other countries such as candidate countries to the European Union, members of EFTA, Japan or the United States (subject to availability). With just over 500 statistical tables, graphs and maps, the yearbook treats the following areas: the economy, population, education, health, living conditions and welfare, the labour market, industry and services, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, international trade, transport, the environment, energy, science and technology and Europe’s regions. This edition’s spotlight chapter covers creativity and innovation – the theme of the European year 2009.

19th Century British Pamphlets

This collection contains the most significant British pamphlets from the 19th century held in UK research libraries. The pamphlets provide users with a wide focus on the political, social, and economic issues of 19th century Britain. More than 20,000 pamphlets are available in this new collection.

Ireland Collection on JSTOR

The Digital Library of Core Resources on Ireland is a comprehensive, multi–disciplinary digital library of research materials relating to Ireland, spanning the 18th century to present. Content includes both current and ceased journals, over 200 monographs, and 2,500 manuscript pages. The collection covers a wide range of disciplines, including music, art, history, literature, archaeology, sociology, mathematics, and science, among many others.

 British Library Archival Sound Recordings now available

Explore 21,000 selected recordings of music, spoken word and human and natural environments. From foghorns to Bach, from Strawberry Frogs to interviews with the History of the Common Cold Unit, there's definitely something of interest for everyone. Search facility is available, and you can create a favourites list for later listening. Most of the recordings can be downloaded, but the following collections are available as streamed content only:

  • Accents and dialects
  • Ethnographic wax cylinders
  • British wildlife recordings

American Chemical Society Journals now includes 'Archive'

Accessible via NORA and the library catalogue the American Chemical Society Journals now also includes an archive of full text PDF’s of all 23 of ACS journals published between 1879 and 1995.  

Covering  some of the most influential research in the fields of chemistry and related sciences such as biological and medicinal chemistry, polymer science and materials science.  

It also covers subjects areas including analytical chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, biotechnology, chemical biology, crystallography, energy and fuels, environmental science, food science, inorganic and nuclear chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacology, physical chemistry, plant sciences, and toxicology.

Current journals taken are also accessed in the same way via NORA or the library catalogue.


British Newspapers 1600-1900

The British Newspapers 1600-1900 is the most significant digital collection of British historic newspapers. New conservation and imaging techniques and a new cross-searchable platform adopted by the British Library offers unparalleled access and discoverability to this valuable historical and cultural archive. In addition one will find specially commissioned essays and contextual materials written by expert scholars intended to help non-specialist users with perspective and analysis.

17th and 18th Century Burney Collection 

The newspapers and news pamphlets gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757 - 1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media. The 700 or so bound volumes of newspapers and news pamphlets were published mostly in London, however there are also some English provincial, Irish and Scottish papers, and a few examples from the American colonies, Europe and India.

IEEE Explore (Comprising IEE / IEEE / IET )

The world's core collection of engineering, electronics, and computer science periodicals and conferences, from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and Institution of Engineering Technology (IET) including archives . Articles and papers available in full text. Also includes access to IEEE standards (excluding drafts). This collection is available on campus or via DESKTOP ANYWHERE

Public Information Online 

Public Information Online is a web-based database of Parliamentary and official publications from 2006/07 Parliamentary Session onwards. All papers are fully searchable PDFs and are uploaded on the day of publication. PIO contains House of Commons Papers, House of Lords Papers, House of Commons Bills, House of Lords Bills, Explanatory Notes for Bills, Public Bill Debates, Standing Committee Debates, Command Papers. Scottish Parliamentary materials will be added from June 2008.

PsycARTICLES

Available from August 2008, is an outstanding resource for Psychology and allied disciplines. Published by the American Psychological Association, PsycARTICLES provides full text access from the first year of publication to the entire archive of 31 APA journals, 16 APA ‘Speciality’ journals, 3 Canadian Psychological Association journals and 9 Hogrefe Publishing Group journals. PsycARTICLES can be used to search across the whole database for journal articles on a particular subject, or it can be used to retrieve the full text of specific journal articles.

New Ebsco Interface

The new EBSCOhost interface is now available with a new, simpler basic search screen, an enhanced result list, and several other new features.
AMED (Alternative Medicine-Allied and Alternative Medicine),  Business Source Premier,  CINAHL with Full Text (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health),  Ebsco EJS (Electronic Journals Service), Film & Television Literature Index with Full Text,  Greenfile, Historical Abstracts, IBSS - International Bibliography of Social Sciences, Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) , MEDLINE,  SPORTDiscus  and Teacher Reference Center  are all available on the Ebsco platform.

Grove Art is now available via Oxford Art Online
Grove Art can be accessed by searching for "Oxford Art Online" on NORA. Oxford Art Online is an extensive and easily searchable art history reference resource which includes Grove Art Online, the Oxford Guide to Western Art, the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms and the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics.

Financial information on 55,000 listed and major unlisted/delisted companies worldwide (43,000 are non-US companies). The information includes: standardised and "as reported" financials (including restated reports), SEC filings, detailed earnings estimates including recommendations, ownership, stock data, news and ratings.

Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts

Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) indexes more than 500 core journals, more than 50 priority journals, and 125 selective journals; plus books, research reports and proceedings. Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. Coverage in the database extends back as far as the mid-1960s.

GreenFILE

GreenFILE offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 384,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 4,700 records.

The Teacher Reference Centre

Provides indexing and abstracts for more than 270 of the most popular teacher and administrator journals and magazines to assist professional educators. It features a user-friendly search screen with useful search options and the choice to limit results to full-text or peer-reviewed articles. The Visual Search option enables you to group, sort and filter results.

DIPEx

A patient experiences site covering many health issues and illnesses. Interviews can be listened to, watched or read. The site also gives reliable information on treatment choices and where to find support; includes cancers, heart disease, mental health, neurological conditions, screening programmes, pregnancy, teenage health, chronic illnesses and many others.

EPPI

The EPPI-Centre is makes reliable research findings about health, education and welfare accessible to the people who need them, whether they are making policy, practice, or personal decisions.  The EPPI-Centre writes and supports others to write comprehensive summaries of this research, which are known as 'systematic reviews' - they do not simply repeat the findings of the research but assess its quality, helping readers to make informed decisions.

CRD-Centre for Reviews and Dissemination

The Centre for Reviews and Dissemination provides research-based information about the effects of interventions used in health and social care. Literature Online is a web based library containing over 350,000 literary texts of English and American poetry, drama and prose together with full-text journals, author biographies, bibliographies and other critical and secondary sources. ASSIA (Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracting service)
Highly recommended by one of our Information Specialists.
ASSIA has wide coverage for the social sciences. The advanced search is really easy to use and, best of all, it retrieves peer-reviewed articles.
It is a British service, although it does have an international coverage; a good database for the topics of social sciences, sociology, economics, politics, psychology, social work education, health, human resource management, consumer behaviour and organisational change.

Updated on a rolling basis, they are always current.

House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (HCPP) 18th, 19th & 20th century now available 

HCPP currently covers the period 1688 -2003. Search by keywords, or browse the subject index to retrieve the full text House of Commons Papers, Command Papers, Bills and Reports of Committees. Between 1801 and 2000, around 9.5 million pages for over 184,000 parliamentary papers were published. Since 2001, the number of papers has grown by approximately 4,000 for each parliamentary session. HCPP delivers searchable full text for each paper, along with a detailed subject index.

This resource replaces the Lexis Nexis Executive service.

Nexis UK is a full text database including UK national and regional newspapers and trade press plus many newspapers and magazines published worldwide. It also includes full text information covering companies, industries, countries and people.

Jorum

Staff at Northumbria now have access to this resource via Athens. Jorum is a repository providing access to learning and teaching materials and encouraging the sharing, re-use and re-purposing of them between teaching staff at UK FE and HE institutions.

Registration is required before you gain access to the repository -  an acknowledgement comes within 1 - 5days.
You can then browse or search the repository for materials.
