Borrowing & Services

Issue
Items are borrowed using the issue points or from the Customer Support Desk at City Campus and Coach Lane Libraries. You must bring your University Smartcard and PIN with you every time you use the Library, since items cannot be issued or renewed without them.
Return
Items may be returned by using the return points or at the Customer Support Desks.

Number of Loans
Loan limits vary according to the category of borrower and the category of the item.
For example:
Students may borrow up to 10 items
Final year/Postgraduate students may borrow up to 15 items
Staff may borrow up to 20 items
Full details are available from the Borrower Services desk at either City or Coach Lane Library.

Materials for Loan
Books may be loaned for seven days or four weeks
Videos may be loaned for seven days or four weeks - Some videos may be reference only, so can only be viewed in the Library
Multi-media packs may be loaned for seven days or four weeks
SR books (School Resources) may be loaned usually for four weeks

Please note reference items cannot be borrowed and are for use in the library only.

Fines
Fines are charged on overdue items.
Charges are 15p per item per day for four week loans and 20p per item per day for seven day loans. The maximum fine per item is £10 for a four week loan and £20 for a seven day loan. Please note that if you incur fines in excess of £5.00 your library account may be suspended.

Northumbria University students can now pay overdue library fines online through the e learning portal or My Northumbria.  Minimum payment is £1.00.

Credit/debit card payments for charges/fines over £1.00 can be processed at City Campus Library and Coach Lane Library.
