Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Licence
The licence permits photocopying of extracts from most books, journals, periodicals, conference proceedings and law reports.
This covers most UK publications as well as the publications of several other countries. Before making any copies under this licence check the CLA User Guidelines displayed by each photocopier for the countries covered and excluded categories of published material.
How much material can be photocopied?
The basic permission to photocopy extends to the copying (from paper on to paper) of:
- Up to 5% or one whole chapter (whichever is the greater) from a book
- Up to 5% or one whole article (whichever is the greater) from a single issue of a journal
- Up to 5% or one paper (whichever is the greater) from a set of conference proceedings
- Up to 5% of an anthology of short stories or poems or one short story or one poem of not more than 10 pages (whichever is the greater)
- 5% or one single case (whichever is the greater) from a published report of judicial proceedings
Does the licence cover copying of words and graphics?
Yes - copies can be made of a printed page that consists entirely of text or graphical images (such as photographs, illustrations, drawings or diagrams) or of a page that consists of a combination of words and images.
Who can make and receive photocopies?
All registered students and all academic and administrative staff of the institution can make their own photocopies and also receive photocopies made on their behalf.
It is therefore permissible for a lecturer or tutor to distribute multiple copies of extracts to all students enrolled on the module or course taught.
The licence also covers students studying as part of a 'Distance Education' based programme.
