Newspaper Licensing Agency (NLA) Licence
The NLA is authorised by the publishers of certain newspapers to grant non-exclusive licences to copy cuttings:
- For distribution to staff for internal management purposes
- For distribution to students for educational and instruction purposes.
The licence permits staff and students to:
- Make photocopies, both ad hoc and systematically as part of a press cuttings distributions service, of cuttings taken from NLA newspapers
- To fax cuttings taken from those newspapers
- To include photocopies of cuttings for inclusion in study packs
- To project cuttings taken from those newspapers by illumination on to a screen
- To digitally scan cuttings, or to receive digital cuttings from a press cuttings agency or public relations consultancy, for circulation by email or other electronic means, from most NLA newspapers, subject to specific conditions
Limitation to the licence
- Limited to copying taking place within the United Kingdom (including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man)
- Does not include photographs, illustrations or advertisements appearing in newspapers
- Limited to making up to 250 copies of any one cutting
- Records must be kept of cuttings made to comply with auditing obligations
All cutting or collection of cuttings must be stamped with a notice:
"Copyright belongs to the NLA. No further copies may be made without the
licence of the NLA.
A list of newspapers covered by the licence is displayed by each
photocopier.
