Ordnance Survey Licence

This licence permits the holder to reproduce and utilise Ordnance Survey materials for their internal use as follows:

  • Copy maps for teaching, lecturing, examination and University research purposes only
  • Use digital mapping for teaching, lecturing, examination and University research purposes only
  • Colour facsimile copies of mapping at a scale of 1:25 000 and smaller must not exceed A4 size (625 sq. cm)
  • There are no size restrictions for mapping at 1:10 000, 1:2500 and 1:1250 scales, redrawn or substantially amended mapping or black and white copies of small scale maps.

Every reproduction must carry:

  • An acknowledgement, the usual form of which will be:
    ‘Reproduced from the .....(1) Ordnance Survey .......(2) map with the permission of The Controller of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, © Crown copyright ....(3)
    1 = year of publication
    2 = scale and name of map e.g. 1:50 000 scale Landranger©
    3 = UNN, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 8ST, Licence No: ED 24371X]
  • If a reproduction is not limited to Ordnance Survey material, replace the words ‘Reproduced from’ with ‘Based upon’ in the acknowledgement. For a finished reproduction of less than 200sq. cm, the note ‘© Crown copyright’ will be enough.
  • Transparent copies of Ordnance Survey maps more than 1250 sq. cm must also be stamped with: "Unauthorised reproduction infringes Crown copyright and may lead to prosecution or civil proceedings".
  • Where out-of-copyright material has been reproduced, use this acknowledgement: "Reproduced from ......(year of publication) Ordnance Survey map".

You may not:

  • Transfer Ordnance Survey material into computer readable form, e.g. digitising or scanning
  • Incorporate digital map data in third party products
  • Reproduce Ordnance Survey material by outside printing firms.

Ordnance survey material available through the EDINA Digimap service.

The Data is available for teaching, educational research, academic Research or limited Business uses only.

All Graphic outputs (on screen or on paper) produced from the Ordnance survey data must carry the following acknowledgement.
