Disabled Users

University Library and Learning Services Staff are happy to help users with disabilities.

To make full use of our services please discuss your needs with your Disability Adviser in Student Services

If you would like a personal tour and induction to the Library, or you experience any problems in accessing our facilities please contact ask4help@northumbria.ac.uk.

If you are a visitor with a disability, please contact Library Staff prior to your visit to discuss any access requirements.

Wheelchair access to Libraries

City Campus - There is an access ramp at the entrance to the Library.

Coach Lane Campus - Access via the main front door of the Library.

Law Practice Library - There is lift access to the Law Practice Collection which is situated on Floor 1 of the Law and Business Building at City Campus East.

Language Resources Centre - Is situated on Floor 1, City Campus Library.

Reserved parking bays are available at both Campuses.

Toilets with wheelchair access are available at all sites.

Assistance in the Libraries link to top of page

Help is available in obtaining items from the shelves at all Library sites.  Please contact staff at the ground floor service point who will retrieve material for you.  If you require a permanent arrangement, please contact the Disabilities Adviser.  The Disabilities Adviser can also assist if you need support such as a reader or a support worker.  Helpline telephones in unstaffed areas provide a link to the Enquiry desk during Library staffed hours.

Photocopying

Library staff will assist with photocopying.  Please contact the Ground floor service point.  Coloured paper is available on request.  We may be able to assist you in ways not already identified.  If you have specific needs that have not been covered here, please contact the Disabilities Adviser.

Book Loans and Renewals

If you have a support worker and would like to arrange for them to collect items on your behalf, please provide this person with a letter of authorisation and your Smartcard.

Special arrangements can be made on an individual basis for extended borrowing times.  Contact the Disabilities Adviser. 

You may renew items in person at any Library, or on-line through the Library catalogue using the 'My Account' option.  You will need your Library number and PIN.

Item Reservations

It is possible to reserve an item that is on loan to another borrower or is situated at another site library.

You will need your Library number and PIN.

Braille embosser - is available to Visually Impaired students.  Contact sv.disability@northumbria.ac.uk if you wish to use this service.

CCTV enlarger - is located on floor 1 of City Campus library.

Height adjustable desks - are available at City Campus and Coach Lane libraries.


Accessible Software link to top of page

Specialist disabilities software is available over the University network via Citrix. Users must register for the Assistive Desktop.  Students should contact Student Services Disability Support Service

Study Space link to top of page

Study Space

A study room is available for disabled students to use.  This is located in the basement at the City Campus Library and is available during core opening hours.

The room is equipped with a height adjustable desk, adjustable chair, and assistive desktop including Visual Thesaurus and Inspiration.

The room may be booked via the Ask4Help service:

Bookings are also accepted by emailing lr.led@northumbria.ac.uk  

Bookings are taken for a maximum of 3 hours, twice per week, for a maximum of up to 4 weeks.

Fire and Emergency Procedures

In the event of an emergency, the alarm bell will ring.  The Library does not have visual alarms and users should be aware of this.

It is advisable for all readers with mobility problems or hearing loss to inform the Welcome Desk when entering and leaving the building.  In event of an emergency, we can alert the Fire Brigade to your presence in the building.

A CCTV is in operation at all sites.

Any staff working on the floors will offer appropriate assistance.
