Geography Student helping Skateboarders redefine Newcastle

Adam, working with Applied Sciences lecturer Dr Michael Jeffries, has teamed up with Dance City, Northern Architecture and Native Skates to launch a project to explore Newcastle through the eyes of skateboarders.

The work will lead to an exhibition about Tyneside’s skate scene at Dance City on June 19th 2010 as part of the North East’s Festival of Architecture.

The aim of the project is to explore different, alternative, personal geographies and to see how people see their world and their sense of place. As part of this Adam is interviewing skaters and getting them involved in planning their world, their days out and legendary skating spots and skaters. The psychogeographical maps and doodles are being collected to be unveiled together with videos and photographs that skaters will to show at the event.

Dr Jeffries told Flavour “The chance to research and explore something they are interested in really motivates students especially when they see their work published or up in exhibitions or they are invited along to talk to organisations. We are keen to get our students involved in research projects allowing them to develop their own special interests. In every case we want students to see themselves as involved as part of the team, actively leading the work, an experience that not only builds their confidence but is great for careers too.”

The event is free to attend and is being held at Dance City on Saturday 19 June 2010 for more information visit playspacenewcastle.blogspot.com
