Constructive Experience for Built Environment Students

Sixty lucky second year students studying construction related courses within Northumbria’s School of the Built Environment were given the opportunity to take part in a 5 day, hands on project called ‘Constructionarium’.

The project involved the students producing a method statement as to how they would undertake the work, carrying out risk assessments, costing the project initially, monitoring costs during construction, setting out the structure and planning the work. They were then involved in the actual construction of scaled down landmarks such as The Gherkin, Barcelona Tower, Millennium Galleries and Naples Airport Underground Station. They received sponsorship and technical guidance from companies GB Building Solutions Ltd and Core People Recruitment.

Dave Thompson, a student project manager who led his team to produce a scale down version of The Gherkin said: ‘It presented us with some real challenges as we had some problems with the foundations of the building during construction. Despite this, we were able to finish the building on time and everyone in the team has had a great experience’.

Richard Humphrey, Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University said: ‘Watching the students apply what they’ve learnt in the classroom to a real life setting is a great way of seeing how they understand and put into practice what they have been taught. The School of the Built Environment works with National Construction College each year to offer this unique experience to students.
