Journalism Students Learning from the Best

Forty second and third year BA (Hons) Journalism students received expert advice from Adam Boulton, influential political editor of Sky News, when he visited Northumbria’s School of Arts and Social Sciences recently for a question and answer session.

The Sky news veteran has interviewed some of the most influential figures in politics including Gordon Brown, George W Bush and Barack Obama and during the 2010 general election campaign Adam moderated the first ever Sky News leaders’ debate between Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

Journalism student, Michael Lightfoot said of the experience: “I thought Adam’s insight into the world of politics was a real eye-opener. His love for the job is insatiable and just five minutes with him would help any keen journalist understand what is needed to succeed.”

“Programme Leader Lisa Hardisty said that Adam’s visit to Northumbria was an honour for the students and noted “Adam Boulton is an impressive man and his visit was an invaluable opportunity for our Journalism students to gain an insight into his role at Sky News. His pedigree in terms of the field of political journalism is outstanding.”

Adam Boulton said: “It was great to meet the rising generation of journalists at Northumbria, this job isn’t getting easier but they seemed to be developing the commitment and sharpness to deal with even the slipperiest politician.”
