Working while you study

Right to work in the UK - what you need to know

Whether taking a part time job during your studies, or employment in the UK following graduation you will need to prove your right to work in the UK.

In accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006, you are required to show the accepted documentation before you begin work. If you are working for Northumbria University you will need to show your documentation to either the person who has recruited you, or to staff in the Careers Centre in Northumberland Building. Accepted documentation is your current passport OR your full birth certificate (which includes the names of your parents) combined with an official document giving your National Insurance number. Documents must be the originals - we can not accept copies.

If you are working part time at Northumbria University during your studies you will need to register online at www.northumbria.ac.uk/careers and click on the link to Student Jobs Online. Once you have completed the registration from there you will need to show your documentation prior to beginning work.

Don't forget for support with any of your Career planning and applications call into the Careers Centre to see how we can help.
