Ethnic Minority Mentoring Scheme

Mentoring for Success - what could you achieve with the support of a mentor?

The scheme pairs students from Northumbria University with volunteer mentors from a range of large, well known organisations.  To be eligible you must be a UK undergraduate from an ethnic minority background. The aim is:

  • To develop contacts who could help you with planning your career.
  • To give you an insight into different career options, and help you prepare for the world of work.
  • To improve you commercial awareness and employability skills.

To get the best out of this scheme you must be committed and have regular meetings with your mentor over a six month period which runs from November until April.  At the end of the scheme you will be awarded a certificate and have gained a good knowledge of work cultures through your role model.  You will have also the added advantage of building up your network for the future.

Previous comments show that participants have benefited hugely from this scheme.

  • "One of the main benefits was the mock interview, it allowed me to experience what a real interview would be like.  It definitely took away the fear of doing an interview by experiencing what one was like." Participant 2010
  • "I would definitely recommend this scheme to others, as not only did it help me gain an understanding of a work environment, but also provided me the opportunity to gain feedback about the way I work etc. which in normal circumstances I wouldn't be able to get."
  • "My mentor was always supportive and helped me to develop good planning and organising skills which will be useful now and in the future."

To take part you must be a UK undergraduate student from an ethnic minority background.

The scheme is currently closed to new applicants for academic year 2011-12.
