Careers Centre

Whether you know what you want to do or you don't, we can help you. Call into the Careers Centre during opening hours and get access to a wide range of resources. Staff will help with any information enquiries whether you are looking for material to takeaway and use at your leisure or whether you want to use our range of reference material in our Careers Centre. The resources that we have are there to help you, but it may also be useful to discuss your plans with a Careers Adviser.

The Careers Centre is an open access resource room, where you can use PCs to draft your CV, access the Internet in your job search or watch a DVD on how to develop your interview skills. A wide range of information resources will help you with your career planning and you can work within the centre where help is at hand if you need it.

Careers Information within the Centre by Section

Career Planning - start here
If you're not sure where to start then this is the place for you. This section of the Careers Centre looks at finding a job that would suit you. Resources include texts and Prospects Planner, a career planning software package designed for Higher Education students. It can help to clarify your ideas and suggests which types of jobs might suit you. Also in this section is information specifically related to your subject area. You can explore many options open to you and find out what previous graduates have done.

Work Experience
If you're not sure what counts as work experience or the different options available to you then this is a good place to look. Details of placements, vacation work and voluntary work both at home and overseas can be found here.

Work and Study Overseas
If you're looking to spend time abroad in your vacation or whether you want to venture abroad after you qualify, then this is the section for you. We have general information on developing an international CV to specific country information. Country specific information starts with European countries such as France, Spain and Germany and moves to the other continents such as Australia and New Zealand and the Americas. We also have information on Asia and other parts of the world.

Job Search
Information on how to carry out your job search. Search strategies and different application methods are covered. They include details on curriculum vitae's (CV), employer application forms, speculative letters, online applications, networking and internet job hunting. Reference texts are available and subjects such as employer selection tests, assessment centres are also tackled.

Types of Jobs
Information on different types of jobs. A huge array of jobs covered. You can find out anything from how to get into a profession, the qualifications you will need what you will be doing in the job and the type of salary you can expect.

Employers
Details of employers, includes employer brochures and vacancies advertised with the Careers Service. When available we also have supplies of employer application forms.

Self Employment
If you're thinking of starting a business, or have an idea and not sure what to do with it then this section will provide help. Files on getting starting and where to go for help can be found alongside numerous texts on starting up a business.

Further Study
(Red files) - Details of help available when looking at further study. This includes information on funding further study.
