Chaplaincy and Faith Advice

The Chaplains extend a warm welcome to all members of the University community.

Working together as a team representing various Christian traditions and other faiths, the chaplains and faith advisors offer pastoral and spiritual support to students and staff of different faiths, philosophical beliefs and value systems. We are available to everyone and anyone within the University.

The Chaplains organise events and activities each semester, such as lunches, trips and discussion groups, as well as opportunities for prayer, worship and spiritual exploration. We hold information on local Places of Worship - churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and Gurdwaras - as well as contact details for the University's student faith societies.

The Chaplains are available to individuals who want to talk to someone in confidence, offering a non-judgemental and independent listening ear.

For more information about Chaplaincy activities or to subscribe to regular Chaplaincy e-mailings, contact the chaplaincy and faith advice centre.  Phone: 0191 227 3284 or Email: sv.chaplaincy@northumbria.ac.uk

Note:   There is a 'Faith in Northumbria University' group on Facebook.  Join it to hear about ongoing activities. There is some more informal discussion and items of interest to be found by visiting the Facebook  Faith in Northumbria University pages And we have some resources for spirituality and faith journeys at University, here.

Most days there is a time of prayer in the Chaplaincy Centre. If you would like someone to pray about something that concerns you please either come along to the Peace Room and add you request to the noticeboard just to the right of the door, or email and your request will be added to the noticeboard (or if it is a private request and only to be seen by a member of the chaplaincy team then this is the email link to follow). We would normally keep things on the board for a week, let us know if you’d like it to be on longer.

The Anglican chaplains of Newcastle and Northumbria Universities invite you to St Thomas’ Church, The Haymarket for Ash Wednesday communion on Wednesday Feb 22nd 1.15pm   Link to poster here - please print and display to advertise this service.

Although this is hosted by the Anglican chaplains, anyone is welcome; the Ashing ritual is open to all and anyone in good standing with their own churches is welcome to take communion with us.

The imposition of ashes (‘imposition’ merely means ‘putting on’) is an ancient ritual in which ashes are applied to the forehead  (and sometimes to the hands) with the words “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return ...”. It is a time of reflection on our own mortality and on our lives in a much bigger frame than the fairly immediate horizons we normally work with.

The ash is usually the burnt remains of the previous year’s palm crosses which are mixed with oil to make them capable of being smeared on skin.
