Mental Health

(see also: Disabilities Service; Stress; Depression; Bipolar

Mental health is a general sense of wellbeing, coupled with the emotional resilience to cope with life's problems and conflicts.

Mental health difficulties can manifest themselves in many different ways and are more likely to be experienced during stressful times such as starting university and moving away from home.

Where to get help

Your GP
If you think you are experiencing mental health difficulties, you should see your GP. There are a huge variety of treatments available, some of which involve medication, and many of which involve some form of 'talking therapy'. Your GP will be able to advise you of which treatment is most suitable and will be able to refer you to a qualified therapist or community mental health team if he/she feels it necessary. (Visit the NHS web page or the Keeping Healthy, Keeping Safe link for a guide to your nearest GPs.)

Counselling and Mental Health Support Team

This team contains both counsellors and mental health practitioners. The mental health practitioners can offer support and advice to anyone who feels they are experiencing mental health difficulties. If you feel unable to cope or feel that no-one around understands what you are going through, you may find seeing a member of our team beneficial.
